Brief background: Subaru is the 13th head of the Sumeragi clan and one of a pair of twins—the other being his sister Hokuto. Even at such a young age, he is the strongest onmyouji the clan had. He’s been trained at a young age to become the head and was therefore quite sheltered from the world. When he was nine, his grandmother, the 12th head, took him to Tokyo for the final steps in his training. There, he met a strange boy under a cherry blossom tree who told him a story about how there were corpses buried under the tree. At this point, he doesn’t really remember what happened, and has no idea who the boy is.

From this point in canon, the beginning of the story, Subaru and his sister are living in Tokyo so that Subaru can take on various jobs that requires his skills as an onmyouji. Here, they befriended a kind veterinarian named Sakurazuka Seishirou. Much to Subaru’s chagrin, Seishirou has decided it was love at first sight and constantly speaks about his love for the younger teen and their wedding in the future. To add to that, Hokuto supports it immensely.

Personality: Subaru is a kind, sympathetic, naïve, and pure boy. He takes on people’s problems as his own and puts others before himself. When working, he usually forgets to eat and sleep so that Hokuto usually has to remind him. He is easily flustered, and is just a bit socially awkward, at least when compared to his more outgoing twin. In volume 3, Seishirou talks about prank calls he gets at the clinic and most people would get the sexual undertones of the prank calls he was getting, but Subaru doesn’t get it at all. Subaru also loves animals. His dream is to become a zookeeper but he usually has to skip school to work on whatever new job has come up.
